Traditional HR practices were established in a bygone era

The traditional approaches to HR and talent management are failing. The United States leads the world in employee engagement, but even in America, only 19% of employees consider themselves engaged. In contrast, 21% of Americans believe that aliens landed in Roswell, New Mexico, and that the Federal government is covering up the story.

We need a revolution in how we manage people. Rather than focusing solely on reporting relationships and compensation systems, we need to consider how people can improve well-being and derive more meaning from work.

This means getting leaders to stop pigeonholing HR as a matter of compliance and paperwork, and to start thinking strategically about how the modern workplace and management practices can become an enduring source of competitive advantage for the farsighted few.

I’m excited to announce that the Silicon Guild will be participating in the HR revolution. Along with a number of my fellow authors, I am launching the Future of Work Guild as a community for people management thinkers and doers around the world. I’m excited about helping great people grapple with big issues and connect with each other!

The Future of Work Guild is an initiative with the Silicon Guild to bring together a community of 20–24 people leaders, along with the leading authors and influencers in the field, to explore the big questions facing the future of work, and to share cutting-edge yet practical insights and practices that they can bring back to their organizations.

Online, the Future of Work Guild will give its members a place to discuss curated content and get specific, practical advice and help from top authors and thinkers. In addition to guild-level conversations, members will leverage an “Intellectual Concierge” service to connect 1:1 with authors, thinkers, and other Silicon Valley influencers that might be able to help. This on-demand problem-solving will let Guild members get instant help and answers from the top minds in the field.

Offline, the Future of Work Guild will hold member events in Silicon Valley twice a year, giving members the chance to meet the relevant authors, influencers, and each other face-to-face, and to build deeper relationships. Member events will also represent an opportunity to enjoy unique Silicon Valley experiences, both professional and personal, including intellectual dinners with the authors.

Online or offline, the Future of Work Guild will deliver cutting-edge insights and inspiring conversations that will let members return to their CEOs and Boards and say, “This is what I’m learning from the Silicon Guild, and this is what we need to start doing differently!”

The Future of Work Guild’s inaugural cohort will kick off in 2016. If you'd like to nominate a thinker and doer to participate, or if you'd like to throw your own hat in the ring, contact the Silicon Guild at info@siliconguild.com. The HR revolution starts now!
